Community Outreach
Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild
Harmony House
In 1997, OPQG accepted a request from the Family Violence Center to decorate a room at Harmony House, (a newly-acquired building at that time). Harmony House provides a safe environment for abused women and their children. After decorating our assigned room, our members chose Harmony House as a priority recipient of the guild’s ongoing community outreach efforts. Throughout the year, guild members generously donate money and numerous other items to meet the needs of the women and children who reside at Harmony House.
Newborns in Need
Donation quilts are a huge part of what we do at OPQG. Our Baby Quilts effort is under the Community Quilts umbrella. Quilts are made and donated to the Springfield, Mo., chapter of Newborns in Need. The quilts are baby-themed, approximately 36″ square and are a fast, fun project for anyone who has even just a little time to sew.
Quilts of Valor
The Patriotic Piecemakers have a presentation event a few times each year. While all patriotic quilts made by OPQG members are donated, the Quilts of Valor donation quilts must meet specific QOV guidelines for presentation to combat veterans. These guidelines come from both the QOV national organization and the OPQG Patriotic Piecemakers committee. The Patriotic Piecemakers keep up the hard work to provide veterans with a quilt to say “thank you” for all they unselfishly gave.
Operation Squad Car
We partner with local law enforcement agencies by making child-size quilts for children who are taken into protective custody. This program provides officers with a quilt that’s made with loving care that they can give a child to keep for their own. Quilts are typically packaged with a small plush toy and include a note from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department explaining the quilt was made with love by the Ozark Piecemakers Quilt Guild and toy and protective care are from the officers.
Doll Quilts for Crosslines
The OPQG doll quilt program is sponsored by the night Guild meeting attendees. Members make and donate small, 15” and 30,” square or rectangle. doll quilts to Crosslines, a division of Council of Churches of the Ozarks. In 2019, Crosslines distributed more than 500 of our doll quilts to children in their Christmas Store.
