Patriotic Piecemakers—Quilts of Valor
The Patriotic Piecemakers was established within OPQG in 2014. The group meets monthly on the 3rd Wednesday from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. The group creates Quilts of Valor to be awarded to veterans and active-duty service members who have been nominated by family, friends, or anyone who knows the individual. Nominations are made through the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF.org). You don’t need to attend meetings to be part of our group, as you can sew blocks and or quilts for a deserving veteran at your home and drop them off at the guild upon completion. Contact Paula Johnson or Mary Vaughan for more information (qov@ozarkpiecemakers.com).
Patriotic Piecemakers hosts ceremonies to award quilts several times each year. While all patriotic quilts made by OPQG members are donated, the Quilts of Valor donation quilts must meet specific Quilts of Valor guidelines to be awarded to combat veterans or active-duty service members and women. These guidelines come from the QOV Foundation and the OPQG Patriotic Piecemakers group.
- The quilt top should be 62″ x 72″, 60″ x 80″ or slightly larger (suggested range in size as noted in the QOV Foundation website is no smaller than 55″ x 65″ and no larger than 72″ x 90″) as a uniform size is desirable for the quilt presentation ceremony.
- Only cotton fabric, thread and batting may be used for quilts. Exposure to chemical agents while in service causes some veterans extreme sensitivity to polyester and other synthetics.
- Piecing a quilt that resembles or replicates the American flag is NOT permitted. Fabrics featuring American flags are allowed.
- Wash and dry the completed quilt with unscented laundry products to eliminate odors and allergens.
- Labels for Quilts of Valor will be provided for quilts. Please do not apply a label.
- Do not include fabrics or motifs with political or religious themes.
The Patriotic Piecemakers keep up the hard work to award veterans and active-duty service members with a quilt to say “Thank You” for all they unselfishly gave their time, talent, energy, dedication and sacrifice.
