On Thursday, May 6, 2021, our education committee hosted a Color Confidence class to learn about color, taught by Kathleen Day (a retired art teacher). The students looked at many slides of quilts as we discussed color terms and combinations. We learned how to determine the value (darkness and lightness) by using our phones, shaded shapes of a quilt on paper, compared color samples next to each other, and talked about using neutrals to set off colors. We went home with an assignment to use our own fabric swatches to make examples of various color combinations so we would be ready to tackle any new project. Students gained a new understanding of what makes a quilt “sing” using color.
