Modern Group
Quilting Innovation
OPQG’s Modern Group
The Modern Group was founded in 2015 to showcase innovations in quilting styles and encourage guild members to explore the growing interest in modern quilting. Modern Quilting, then, and even now, represents the fastest-growing quilt topic in the entire world. Mary Vaughan and Kim Forman lead the group. Since many of The Modern Group quilters are also traditional quilters, the group tries to blend a combination of both styles to increase the versatility of the quilts they produce. The Modern Group supports all OPQG community efforts by creating quilt projects that showcase the modern approach to each effort.
In 2019, the Modern Group produced the guild’s in-between (fundraiser) quilt, utilizing modern-style fabrics with a more traditional block pattern. Tula Pink and Moda Grunge fabrics were used to add a fresh appeal. Also, during 2019, the group decided to create welcome gifts for new members. Their first project was to create a coaster for each new member and include the pattern. Their current welcome gift is a needle wallet with instructions. They make these using their supplies, without the financial support of the guild, as a way of giving back to the entire guild’s efforts.
Typically, the group creates its education classes in modern techniques and, from time to time, invites members from the guild at large to join them. Education is always focused on the techniques of modern quilting. These events are listed on the Modern Group’s private Facebook page. This Facebook page is open to all guild members. The group meets on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm unless otherwise posted. Anyone is welcome to come to visit or join the group.
Members may contact Mary Vaughan or Kim Formam (their contact information is on the membership roster). Non-guild members interested in this group are encouraged to contact our membership chair through our website’s contact form, available here.
