Jodie Davis

Jodie Davis has been designing and sharing her designs since the 1980s. Her designs are featured in more than 30 books on quilting, she has written. That includes Hometown Quilts and Raw-Edge Appliqué.  She is co-creator and host of “Friends in the Bee,” plus the face you see most often on Quilter’s News Network (www.quiltersnewsnetwork.com), as she hosts three shows on the worldwide quilting bee. She counts herself as truly lucky to work in the quilting world, which she proclaims in the only real-world she believes in.

Davis, an accomplished quilter and paper-piecer, took on the challenge of paper-piecing curves. She repeatedly came across curved quilt block designs in magazines and thought that there had to be an easier way. She couldn’t resist the temptation to experiment. After experimenting on a church window block and a few more samples, she decided that her technique worked. “There is something new in quilting!”

If you are interested in trying her techniques, the OPQG Library has the following books by Jodie Davis.

Paper-Pieced Curves by Jodie Davis

Included in this book are eight projects using Davis’ method of paper piecing curves. You learn how to take small pleats from excess fabric to create beautiful textural effects. There are several block designs, such as Hourglass Hexagon, Drunkard’s Path and Crescent Moon Dance.

Backyard Bird Quilts by Jodie Davis

Jodie Davis discovered that quilters seem to have a love for birds in common.  She started a backyard bird block-of-the-month on her website that was met with so much enthusiasm from quilters that she put the blocks together in this book along with pictures sent in of quilts made from the block-of-the-month program.

In this book, learn how to paper-piece 14 different bird blocks that can be incorporated into any number of home decorating projects to showcase both a love of quilting and an interest in bird watching. It includes more than 40 pages of full-size paper-piecing templates to take the guesswork out of pattern enlargement.

Quick and Easy Quilting by Jodie Davis and Linda Hampton Schiffer

From the Foundation Piecing Library, this book includes more than 150 patterns and inspiring ideas for creating beautiful quilt blocks, from start to finish.  Foundation piecing allows anyone who can sew to become a quilter. The blocks are constructed by machine sewing along lines drawn on a paper or fabric foundation.  First, the block design is transferred to the foundation. With the marked lines face up, two pieces of fabric, right sides together, are placed under the foundation and stitched to the foundation along the marked line. The two fabric pieces are pressed open into place. More pieces are added until the block is complete. Finally, the blocks are sewn together, and voila’—a completed quilt top. Foundation piecing is easy enough for a beginner yet challenges the seasoned quilter. Above all, foundation piecing offers accuracy and speed.
