Mastering the Quilter’s Seam

The Education Committee hosted a class on Mastering the Quilter’s Seam—How to Sew an Accurate Quarter Inch Seam and More. The class was taught by OPQG member, Jillian Grant. There were eight attendees for the event held on March 4, 2021.

The attendees learned the difference between a full quarter-inch, scant quarter-inch and regular-inch seams and why the scant quarter-inch seam is preferred when sewing quilt projects.

The class made a three-piece strip and turned this into a nine-patch. They also made two sets of half square triangles which they then sewed together to create a block with perfected points. Jillian showed attendees how they could use blue painter’s tape to mark a scant quarter-inch line on their machines if they do not have a quarter-inch sewing foot or the ability to change the needle position on their machine. The goal was to help quilters gain consistency in their seaming.

Jillian thanks all those who attended the class and for their enthusiastic participation. Also, a special thank you goes to Yevonne Shafer and Wanda Coffelt for their leadership, class scheduling and event photos.
