Classroom at the Show—Slow Stitching 101 by OPQG Member Karen Mills

Friday, September 27, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm in the east lecture hall
• Supplies provided: Fabric, thread, needle, scissors, embellishments
• Slow Stitching. What is it? It has been described as a relatively new concept that incorporates old hand-stitching traditions. It’s more about the process than the end product. It uses a piece of fabric, needle, thread and a running stitch to join the fabric to batting or flannel backing. It’s a way to calm your mind and body by focusing solely on the fabric and thread in your hand and being mindful of the present moment. It’s a way to grow in your creativity by freeing you from the stress of rules and expectations that can stifle your creativity and inhibit skill development.
• In our busy lives, we need some slow-down time to connect with our quiet selves. You can slow stitch in the early morning with a cup of tea, as you sit in a waiting room or in the school pickup line, or anytime you just need to slow down and take a breath. Come take a break with us, relax, and explore slow stitching.
• Attendees can incorporate the slow stitching technique into their sewing/quilting journey after the class.
• Karen has been sewing, quilting, and hand-stitching her entire life. About two years ago, she fell in love with “slow stitching” and developed a workshop to share the fun and benefits of the technique with OPQG’s Odyssey Art Quilt Group. Quilt Odyssey is a small OPQG group of creative quilters who enjoy exploring new ideas and techniques. They are passionate about the quilting world and invite you to join us.
You will not receive physical tickets if you sign up for a class or lecture at the show. Your name will be on a paid guest list at the door of the classroom or lecture hall and you will check in then. Purchasing tickets to a class or lecture is a fee over and above the price of admission to the OPQG Show.
• The bird picture [below] from Karen is not what class attendees will create but represents the slow stitching technique.
